AI Overviews and Social Citations: Why Google Cites Reddit and LinkedIn More Than ChatGPT Does (2026)

Google AI Overviews pulls about 12.2% of its citations from social platforms. ChatGPT pulls 0.46%. Here's what the 2026 data shows, why the gap exists, and where to publish for each engine.

Key takeaways

  • In Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms were 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations and 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, a gap of roughly 26x.
  • ChatGPT's Reddit share collapsed. Older advice that says "get on Reddit to get into ChatGPT" is stale.
  • LinkedIn is now ChatGPT's top social source (0.3%), and it grows steadily on Google and Perplexity.
  • YouTube leads Google AI Overviews at 4.28%, with Facebook and Instagram ahead of what most teams expect.
  • Each engine wants a different social play. One "social strategy for AI" does not exist.

The headline gap

A year ago the standard advice was simple: Reddit is the most-cited domain in AI answers, so go build a presence there. Peec AI's analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit on top across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Semrush's three-month study said ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of tracked prompt responses in early August 2025.

That picture has changed, and the change is lopsided.

Promptwatch Data's October 2026 social citations report looked at ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews from Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Here is what it found:

EngineSocial share of citationsTop social platform
Google AI Overviews12.2%YouTube (4.28%)
Perplexity2.7%LinkedIn and Reddit tied (0.86%)
ChatGPT0.46%LinkedIn (0.3%)

Averaged across the three engines, YouTube is 1.70%, Reddit 1.03%, LinkedIn 0.90%, Facebook 0.81%, Instagram 0.56%, TikTok 0.07% and X 0.04%.

A caution before going further. Different studies measure different things. Semrush's 60% figure is a share of responses that cite Reddit. Promptwatch's numbers are share of all citations. Don't put them in the same chart. A domain can appear in a large fraction of responses while still being a small slice of total citations, because almost half of ChatGPT responses cite 10 or more unique domains (Promptwatch Data, Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026).

What happened to Reddit in ChatGPT

This is the part that still surprises people.

Semrush documented an abrupt drop in September 2025. ChatGPT went from citing Reddit in roughly 60% of tracked responses in early August to around 10% by mid-September, and Wikipedia fell with it. Both stayed in ChatGPT's top two domains afterward, just with a much smaller lead.

Then it happened again, harder. Promptwatch's Reddit report (data from Jul 7 to Aug 17, 2026) shows Reddit holding a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7. The slide started Aug 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behavior. On Aug 14 it fell below 1%, and the Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.

By the October report, Reddit's ChatGPT share had gone from 5.19% in the earlier report to 0.09%.

Why? Nobody knows for certain. Semrush's expert thinks ChatGPT is trying to avoid over-citing single sites and be harder to manipulate. Promptwatch says it can't confirm a cause, and flagged that a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out for the August figures. The October numbers, though, are consistent with the August story. I'd treat the direction as real and the exact size as provisional.

The timing is worth noting. ChatGPT also started using the site: operator at scale on Aug 8, 2026, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fan-out queries (Promptwatch Data). That is a big behavior change in how ChatGPT searches, and it plausibly reshuffled which sources show up. Correlation, not proof.

Why Google is different

Google's surfaces never walked away from social. Reddit's share in AI Overviews eased gradually from about 2.5% to 2.1%, an 11.3% relative decline over the same window where ChatGPT fell off a cliff. AI Mode fell from 2.22% to 1.54%, a 30.5% decline, with the clearest step at the end of July.

A few things plausibly explain why Google keeps citing social at this rate:

  • Google owns or partners with several of these platforms. Semrush noted that AI Mode's top cited domains included LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Google and Google Blog, all properties Google owns or has a major partnership with.
  • Google's index already ranks community content for conversational queries, and AI Overviews are built on top of that retrieval.
  • Google leans on platforms like Facebook and Yelp for local and consumer queries, per Peec AI's analysis.

In the October data, Facebook more than doubled to 2.38% of AI Overviews citations, passing Reddit at 2.15%. Instagram sits at 1.61% and LinkedIn at 1.55%, and both grew. TikTok appears only on AI Overviews, at 0.22%.

That Facebook number is the one I'd pay attention to. Most brand teams have written off Facebook as a dead channel for B2B and a stale one for B2C. AI Overviews apparently did not get the memo.

The LinkedIn story

LinkedIn is the one platform that looks steadily up across engines. Semrush saw AI Mode cite it in nearly 15% of responses, and ChatGPT and Perplexity trended upward after the September 2025 shuffle. One theory from Semrush is that LinkedIn picked up some of the citations Reddit and Wikipedia lost. Plausible, though unproven.

But which LinkedIn content gets cited depends heavily on the engine. Promptwatch's August 2026 LinkedIn page-type report compared that month against May 18 to Jun 17:

EnginePulse articlesPostsCompany pages
All engines30.41%27.75%18.05% (up from 13.35%)
ChatGPT3.65% (from 8.77%)26.45% (from 12.09%)33.68% (from 23.84%)
AI Mode34.66% (from 44.85%)24.39%13.53% (from 10.71%)
AI Overviews34.51% (from 42.25%)23.06%14.46% (from 12.86%)
Perplexity26.01% (from 32.46%)37.32% (from 41.88%)22.03% (from 13.09%)

Two things stand out. Pulse articles were about 70% of LinkedIn citations combined with posts earlier in the year and have dropped to about 58% now. And ChatGPT treats LinkedIn almost like a business directory: company pages are a third of its LinkedIn citations, and job listings (6.51%) and help articles (5.97%) show up too. Showcase pages, product pages and LinkedIn Learning barely register.

The practical reading: for ChatGPT, your LinkedIn company page is the asset. For Google, long-form Pulse articles still matter. For Perplexity, short standalone posts that stand up without context are the thing to write.

That screenshot is one of many practitioner posts echoing the same trend. It's anecdotal, so use it as a signal to go check your own data, not as proof.

YouTube: the Google-specific bet

YouTube leads social citations on AI Overviews at 4.28%. On Perplexity it was 2.67% in the earlier report and has dropped to 0.79%. Search Engine Land's coverage of earlier data found YouTube cited heavily in AI search generally, and Semrush found it among the top AI Mode domains. The pattern: YouTube is a Google play first. The transcripts and descriptions are what the models read, so a well-labelled video with a clear transcript is closer to a text page than a video asset.

Platform by platform: what to do

Pulling the Promptwatch recommendations and the broader data together:

Target engineWhere to investWhere not to
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeYouTube first. Keep public Facebook and Instagram profiles complete and active. LinkedIn Pulse articles.X
ChatGPTYour own site, plus the listicles, guides and comparisons ChatGPT cites. LinkedIn company page.Reddit threads as a route into ChatGPT
PerplexityLinkedIn posts and Reddit, both.X

That ChatGPT row deserves a second look. If ChatGPT is your priority channel, social is a rounding error: 0.46% of citations. Product pages are the most cited content type at 22.4% (Promptwatch Data, Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), followed by landing pages and listicles. Landing pages and docs also stay cited longest, while news loses half its pages within 36 days (content half-life data). The work for ChatGPT is on your own domain and on the third-party review and listicle sites it trusts, not on community platforms.

Sector matters too. For software prompts, ChatGPT's top cited sites are GitHub, Microsoft's docs and G2, with documentation and help centers earning the largest share (software citation report). For automotive, marketplaces like Autotrader and Cars.com outrank every car brand (automotive report). None of that is social.

How to measure this for your own brand

Aggregate numbers tell you the climate. They don't tell you whether your brand shows up. A few checks worth running:

  1. Pull the prompts that matter to your category and see which social URLs get cited per engine, not just overall.
  2. Compare before and after dates around known shifts (Aug 8 and Aug 14, 2026 for ChatGPT). Check collection volume around those dates before you react, as Promptwatch suggests, and compare which Reddit URLs were cited before and after.
  3. Separate your own social accounts from third-party mentions. A subreddit thread that names you is a different asset than your own LinkedIn page.
  4. Watch for pages that get cited but don't send traffic, and tie citations to actual visits.

Promptwatch tracks Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citations as dedicated reports, including a "My channels" filter for your own accounts, across the real interfaces of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity.

Practical plan by team type

B2B SaaS

Treat the LinkedIn company page as infrastructure: complete, current, with a clear description. Publish standalone posts that make a single quotable point (Perplexity) and a few Pulse articles (Google). Spend the rest of your effort on documentation, comparison pages and listicles on your own domain, since software prompts in ChatGPT skew to docs and review sites.

Consumer and local brands

Google is where social matters. Keep Facebook and Instagram profiles complete and active, and put real work into YouTube. Reviews matter as well: Yelp and similar platforms came up often in recommendation queries in Peec AI's research.

Developer tools

Docs and GitHub dominate. Social is secondary, and X can be skipped entirely.

What I'd be skeptical of

A few claims floating around deserve a squint:

  • Percentages like "Reddit is 46.5% of Perplexity's top citations" come from a forum post summarizing an unnamed report. Without the method you can't compare it to anything.
  • Any advice written before August 2026 that says ChatGPT leans on Reddit. Promptwatch's own earlier report put ChatGPT's social share at 5.8%. It is 0.46% now.
  • Treating the drop as permanent. Both Semrush and Promptwatch describe ChatGPT's changes as abrupt and volatile. It dropped overnight, and it could swing back.

The volatility is the real lesson. Citation sources can change in a day, so build a mix of owned pages, third-party listings and social profiles instead of betting on one platform that happens to be favored this quarter.

Bottom line

Google cites social platforms about 26 times as much as ChatGPT does, and it has the ownership and index reasons to keep doing so. If your audience finds you through Google's AI surfaces, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn deserve real budget. If it's ChatGPT, put your effort into your own product pages, docs and the comparison content it cites, and keep the LinkedIn company page tidy. Check the Promptwatch Data hub for fresh numbers before you commit, because these figures will move again.
