Key takeaways
- In Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms earned 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations, 2.7% of Perplexity's, and 0.46% of ChatGPT's. That makes AI Overviews roughly 26x more social than ChatGPT.
- YouTube is the strongest social platform for Google audiences (4.28% of AI Overviews citations). Facebook has passed Reddit there.
- ChatGPT has nearly stopped citing social content. Reddit fell from 5.19% to 0.09% of its citations between reports.
- Older studies (Profound, Tinuiti) show ChatGPT at about 9% social. Treat them as earlier snapshots, not current numbers.
- Language matters. The same model can lean on YouTube in Portuguese and Instagram in Arabic.
The headline number, and where it comes from
The 26x figure is simple arithmetic. Promptwatch Data tracked seven social platforms (YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X) across the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews from Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Social platforms made up 12.2% of AI Overviews citations and 0.46% of ChatGPT citations. Divide one by the other and you land around 26.
You can read the full dataset in Promptwatch's social media citations by AI model report. One week is a short window, so treat the exact ratio as a snapshot. The direction, though, is hard to miss.

Social citation share by AI model
Here is the October 2026 picture from Promptwatch Data, with older third-party figures alongside for context.
| Model | Social share of citations (Promptwatch, Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026) | Earlier snapshot (Profound, March 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | 15.3% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | 11.3% |
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | 9.1% |
Profound's study covered 3.25 billion citations across 7 models and 14 countries, and it also measured Google AI Mode (14.5%), Copilot (4.3%), Claude (3.99%) and Gemini (3.6%). Different methodology, different prompts, different month. So don't read the two columns as a clean trend line. Still, the ChatGPT gap is large enough that something real changed.

Why ChatGPT stopped citing social
The short answer is Reddit. In the earlier Promptwatch report, social platforms made up 5.8% of ChatGPT citations, and Reddit alone was 5.19%. By October, Reddit was at 0.09%.
Promptwatch's separate report, Reddit citations are dropping in ChatGPT, shows how it happened. Reddit held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to Aug 7, 2026. On Aug 8 it slid into the mid-2% range, and on Aug 14 it dropped below 1%. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop. Promptwatch flags the size of that drop as provisional, since a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out.
Aug 8 is also the day ChatGPT changed its fanout behavior. ChatGPT started using the site: operator at scale, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of all fanout queries overnight, with searches per response nearly doubling. I would not claim one caused the other. But the timing is hard to ignore, and it is a good reminder that citation behavior can flip in a day.
Google's surfaces behaved differently. In the same report, Reddit eased gradually in AI Overviews (2.37% to 2.10%, an 11.3% relative decline) and fell more in AI Mode (2.22% to 1.54%, down 30.5%). Slow drift, not a cliff.
Which platforms win in each engine
Google AI Overviews
YouTube leads at 4.28%. Facebook comes next at 2.38%, more than double its earlier share and now ahead of Reddit (2.15%). Instagram (1.61%) and LinkedIn (1.55%) follow, and TikTok (0.22%) shows up only here.
Tinuiti's January data pointed the same way: about 13% of AI Overviews citations went to social, around 9% in AI Mode, and roughly 3% in Gemini.
ChatGPT
Everything is tiny. LinkedIn is now the top social platform at 0.3%, which is a strange sentence to write given Reddit's run in 2025 and early 2026.
Perplexity
Social earns 2.7%. LinkedIn and Reddit tie at 0.86%, YouTube is at 0.79% (down from 2.67%), and X peaks at about 0.1%.
Averages across the three engines
| Platform | Average citation share |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 1.70% |
| 1.03% | |
| 0.90% | |
| 0.81% | |
| 0.56% | |
| TikTok | 0.07% |
| X | 0.04% |
YouTube is the only platform that is broadly useful. X is close to irrelevant for AI search.
What gets cited inside a social platform
Domain-level numbers hide a second layer: which asset on the platform earns the citation. BrightEdge looked at Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit and YouTube across nine industries from May 17 to Aug 2, 2026, comparing Google AI Overviews with ChatGPT.

The engines pull different things from the same platform:
- Instagram Reels are 89% of Instagram's AI Overviews citations but 27% of its ChatGPT citations.
- Facebook native video is 53% of its AI Overviews citations and 3% of its ChatGPT citations.
- On ChatGPT, profile infrastructure carries the weight. LinkedIn company and jobs pages are roughly 80% of its ChatGPT citations, Instagram profile pages 42%, Facebook pages 40%.
- Entity questions are 14.0% of LinkedIn's cited prompts on ChatGPT, against under 5% for every other platform.
BrightEdge's takeaway is that a team's posting output feeds AI Overviews, while profile pages feed ChatGPT. That fits what I would expect: ChatGPT is doing lookups (who is this company, what is its status) and AI Overviews is pulling content to illustrate an answer. Notably, no LinkedIn company page in the cited set was cited for more than one prompt, so this looks more like lookup than ranking.
One catch: stale profile fields get returned as answers. Current-status questions are 18.8% of Instagram's cited prompts on ChatGPT. If your Instagram bio still says you are closed for the holidays in 2025, an AI may repeat it.
Language changes the social mix
Profound's study found that query language rewires which social platforms appear. For Google AI Overviews:
| Platform | English (US/AUS/GB) | Portuguese (BR) | Arabic (UAE/KSA) | Spanish (MEX/ES) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 38.0% | 65.0% | 26.0% | 50.5% |
| 21.0% | 7.0% | 4.9% | 11.4% | |
| TikTok | 3.1% | 4.7% | 9.0% | 15.9% |
| 4.6% | 17.0% | 29.0% | 10.5% | |
| 9.0% | 2.8% | 10.1% | 7.4% |
These are shares within social citations, not of all citations. In Arabic, Instagram (29%) overtakes YouTube (26%). In Portuguese, YouTube climbs to 65% and Reddit collapses to 7%. Profound also found that AI Overviews amplifies social content in Portuguese and Spanish while nearly erasing it in Swedish and Arabic overall.
ChatGPT, by contrast, barely localizes its social sourcing. Profound found its social web was overwhelmingly Reddit regardless of country, which is why its social rate dropped from about 10% to 3 to 5% outside English. Given Reddit's later collapse in ChatGPT, that Reddit-heavy social web is the part that disappeared.
Why the third-party numbers disagree
A few things to keep straight when you see social citation stats floating around:
- Muck Rack's headline that AI Overviews cites social 15x more than Copilot is a different comparison. Copilot, not ChatGPT, is the baseline.
- Profound's and Tinuiti's ChatGPT figures predate the August 2026 shifts. They are not wrong for their periods. They are just old.
- Tinuiti noted AI Overviews' tracked citation totals dropped by almost half over its window, which changed how deep tools could see into that surface. Denominators move too.
- Different tools sample different prompts, countries and languages. Compare numbers only within one study.

What to do about it
Promptwatch's recommendations from the October report are refreshingly concrete, and I agree with most of them.
- Google audiences: start with YouTube. Then keep public Facebook pages and Instagram profiles complete and current. Short video on Reels and native Facebook video is what AI Overviews pulls.
- ChatGPT: stop leaning on Reddit threads. Put the effort into your own site and the formats ChatGPT actually cites. Product pages are the most cited type at 22.4%, followed by landing pages and listicles.
- Perplexity: publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit. They tie at 0.86%.
- Skip X in AI search plans.
- Audit your profile fields. LinkedIn company pages, Instagram bios and Facebook About sections are being read as facts by ChatGPT.
- Plan by language. If you sell in Brazil or the Gulf, your platform priorities differ from your US plan.
Measuring it yourself
You can't manage this from a single study. Promptwatch itself runs daily monitors across models and countries and breaks out Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citations in dedicated reports. Other trackers in the space include Profound and Peec AI, and if you want to compare options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists many of them.
Profound

| Need | Tool type | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Track social citations by model and country | AI visibility platform | Promptwatch, Profound |
| Basic mention tracking | Prompt tracker | Peec AI, Otterly.AI |
| Manage posting on the platforms AIO cites | Social scheduler | Sprout Social, Buffer |
| Find which of your pages AI crawls and cites | Crawler logs and citation analytics | Promptwatch |

A caution on over-reading one week
The October figures cover a single week. ChatGPT's behavior moved sharply twice this summer (the Aug 8 fanout change, the Aug 14 Reddit drop), and AI Overviews shifted its mix too. Facebook doubling and YouTube on Perplexity falling from 2.67% to 0.79% show how fast these numbers move. Re-check monthly before making a big budget decision.
The practical bottom line: social is a Google strategy first, a Perplexity strategy second, and for ChatGPT it is mostly your own pages and your profile data that matter.
