Key takeaways
- Scrunch was acquired by Sitecore on June 3, 2026, and XFunnel by HubSpot in October 2025. Adobe's purchase of Semrush and Searchable's deal for Meridian add to the pattern. Standalone monitoring is turning into a feature of bigger suites.
- Profound is still independent after a $96M Series C at a $1B valuation (February 24, 2026). That is a stability signal, not a guarantee.
- Acquisition is not automatically bad for buyers, but the roadmap changes. Scrunch's now points at Sitecore customers.
- Before signing, ask about roadmap ownership, data portability, pricing history, and what happens if the vendor is bought.
- Pricing is unstable too. Profound reportedly removed its $99 Starter and $399 Growth plans in September, leaving a trial and custom Enterprise pricing.
The pattern: AI visibility is being absorbed into suites
Three years ago, tracking whether ChatGPT mentioned your brand was a niche job. Now it is a line item that every big marketing platform wants inside its own product. Count the deals from the last year:
- HubSpot acquired XFunnel in October 2025 (reported at $30M, which I could not confirm from a primary source).
- Sitecore announced it had acquired Scrunch on June 3, 2026. Search Influence reports roughly $225M, but Sitecore's press release does not state a price, so treat that figure as unverified.
- Adobe bought Semrush, per the Agenzy ownership table and IndustryLens notes.
- Searchable acquired New York-based Meridian in a seven-figure deal in September 2026.
If you are a buyer, the useful question is not "is this sad?" It is "why does this keep happening, and what does it do to my contract?"
Why these tools get acquired
Monitoring alone is a thin product
An AI visibility tool checks whether engines name a brand and reports share of voice. It does not change the answer. That is the honest limitation of a pure tracker, and it is why acquirers are not buying dashboards. They are buying distribution into a customer base, plus data and an execution layer.
Sitecore's release makes the logic explicit. Scrunch's insights, recommendations and Agent Experience Platform (AXP) get combined with Sitecore's DXP, and recommendations will be automated inside SitecoreAI Content Management, Content Marketing and Digital Asset Management. The release says "Unlike standalone tools, Scrunch connects directly to Sitecore workflows." That sentence is the whole deal in miniature. CMSWire quotes Sitecore's VP of AI and Innovation, Mo Cherif, describing a shift from "visibility dashboard to content operating loop."
Suites need an AI answer
CMS and marketing platforms are watching their customers ask where AI search fits. Building tracking from scratch means running thousands of prompts across engines through real user interfaces, and that is slow and expensive. Buying a team that already does it is faster. Tools in our catalog like Semrush and Ahrefs Brand Radar are the other route: bolt AI tracking onto an SEO suite, usually with fixed prompt sets and shallower data.

Category crowding
IndustryLens tracks 18 AI search tools, and the list in our catalog is much longer. Differentiation is running through comparison campaigns and original research. When a hundred vendors sell nearly the same dashboard, consolidation is the normal result. Funding makes the difference. Peec AI raised a $21M Series A in November 2025 and Profound raised its Series C. Smaller trackers without that runway are the likeliest to sell, shut down, or pivot.
Scrunch after Sitecore: what changes for buyers
Scrunch still sells as a standalone product with public pricing. Reported entry prices vary by source and date: $250/month on annual billing, about $300 month-to-month, with Growth at $500 (vendor-reported on October 1, 2026). It covers nine engines, according to the vendor: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Meta AI, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Grok. Sitecore says it is trusted by 500+ brands and agencies.

The technical strengths are real. AXP serves agent-friendly versions of your pages at the CDN layer, and Site Optimization reads agent crawl behavior and ranks page fixes. In a vendor-reported Akamai case study, AXP-enabled pages showed a 364% increase in appearances in AI answers to non-branded prompts and 218% more citations than non-AXP pages. That is vendor data, not independent.
The open questions are about direction. I found no independent reporting on Sitecore's post-deal roadmap, pricing changes or customer migration. So the honest position is that nobody outside Sitecore knows yet. Practical risks to price in:
- Feature priority may shift toward Sitecore customers and SitecoreAI integrations.
- Standalone pricing and packaging can change after integration.
- Refresh cadence matters. One review lists Scrunch at roughly every three days, not daily.
- Human-facing content work still happens elsewhere, or inside SitecoreAI.
If you already run Sitecore, this deal is probably good news. If you run Contentful, Sanity or Webflow, ask harder questions.
Profound: independent, but not risk-free
Profound raised a $96M Series C at a $1B valuation led by Lightspeed on February 24, 2026. Search Influence cites $155M in total funding and says it serves more than 10% of the Fortune 500. Those figures can both be true because total funding is not one round, but verify against Profound's own announcement.
Profound

Strengths from Profound's own comparison: prompt-level volume data drawn from a very large conversation dataset (the company cites 2B+ prompts; another review says 1.3 billion), daily prompt runs, Agent Analytics and an agentic layer where Aim proposes ranked projects and a person approves before publication. Enterprise support includes a dedicated Slack channel and a 24-hour specialist SLA.
The risks look different from Scrunch's:
- Pricing opacity. In September, Profound reportedly removed its $99 Starter and $399 Growth plans, leaving a free trial and custom Enterprise contracts. Older articles still quoting $99 and $399 are out of date, and I did not re-verify either figure against the pricing page.
- Variable costs. The credit model for agents can make spend harder to forecast.
- Independence cuts both ways. A $1B valuation creates pressure toward an exit, so "independent today" is not a contract term.

A buyer's due diligence checklist
Acquisition risk cannot be eliminated. It can be contracted around. Before signing with any vendor in this category, ask:
- Who owns the roadmap? Ask for the product plan in writing and which features are planned for non-suite customers.
- What is the change-of-control clause? You want a termination right, without penalty, if the vendor is acquired.
- Can you export everything? Prompts, responses, citations, crawler data and historical trends should come out as CSV or via API.
- What is the pricing history? Check the vendor's pricing page over time. Tools like Page Modified or Visualping can watch it for you.
- What does a prompt or credit actually cover? Sticker prices are not comparable across vendors. Agenzy found per-prompt costs ranging widely, with a ChatGPT-only $99 plan the most expensive per unit.
- How often is data refreshed, and through which interface? User-facing answers and citations can differ from API outputs.
- Does it measure trends over time? A single snapshot misleads. Promptwatch Data found that after the GPT-5.3 rollout on March 4, 2026, average citations per search-enabled ChatGPT response fell from about 6.4 to roughly 4.7 to 4.9, about 27% fewer. A platform-side change moved citations overnight, so a good vendor lets you check model release dates before you blame your content.
Where the independent options sit
If the acquisition risk bothers you, the shortlist is wider than two names. Peec AI is independent, with a $21M Series A and self-serve pricing. Otterly.AI and Ahrefs are independent too, according to Agenzy. For more tools in this category, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com is a decent starting point.
Otterly.AI

On the execution side, Promptwatch is built as an optimization platform rather than a tracker. It combines real-UI prompt tracking with IP-verified AI crawler logs, visitor analytics, and a Content Agent that plans, writes and publishes to Webflow, Framer or WordPress. It is also ISO/IEC 27001 certified, which helps in enterprise procurement. Its pricing is public (Essential $95/month, Professional $245, Business $579), so confirm current numbers at promptwatch.com/pricing.

| Platform | Ownership status | Pricing visibility | Execution layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scrunch | Sitecore | Public | AXP agent pages |
| Profound | Independent | Custom | Agents with approval |
| Promptwatch | Independent | Public tiers | Content Agent, Action Board |
| Peec AI | Independent | Public | Tracking-focused |
| Otterly.AI | Independent | Public | Tracking-focused |

Profound's own comparison page is useful for its feature breakdown, but remember it is written by a competitor of Scrunch.

Search Influence's write-up is a better neutral summary of the ownership picture across Scrunch, Profound and XFunnel.

What I would do
If you already run Sitecore, Scrunch is a sensible pick, and the integration may become its biggest advantage. If you are on another stack and want daily data with agentic workflows, Profound fits, provided you negotiate change-of-control terms and a price cap. If you want an end-to-end option with public pricing, shortlist Promptwatch next to them.
Whichever you choose, assume the vendor could be bought within your contract term. Write the contract for that case, keep your data exportable, and re-check the roadmap at every renewal. If you want an outside opinion on vendor selection, an agency such as 1001 SEO Media can help scope an AI search program that does not depend on any single tool.
