Key takeaways
- The sticker price tells you almost nothing. Across the tools below, the cost of 1,000 AI responses runs from roughly $10 to over $100, and entry plans from $29 to $295 a month.
- Vendors count different things: prompts, checks, credits, answers. Before comparing, convert everything to cost per response and state how many engines each prompt covers.
- Per-prompt cost is easier to read but misleading. A prompt tracked on one engine is not the same product as a prompt tracked on eight.
- Annual billing is the largest easy discount, usually 15% to 20%. Free tiers are rare; 7 to 14 day trials are the norm.
- Cheap plans usually cost you engines, seats, exports and API access first, then sampling depth.
Why per-response beats sticker price
Every AI rank tracker sells the same underlying thing: repeated queries against AI answer engines, plus a record of what came back. The price differences come from how many queries you get, on how many engines, and how often they rerun.
Sample size matters more than the feature list. A 2026 statistical study of Perplexity, OpenAI search and Gemini, published on arXiv, found that citation rankings are unstable across samples, with many apparent differences between domains sitting inside the noise floor. A single run gives a misleadingly precise picture. So a cheap plan is not a smaller version of an expensive one. Below a certain sample size, you are looking at noise.
That is why the unit to compare is the response, not the plan.

The table above comes from a vendor comparison page (Rank Prompt, which sells one of the tools in it and openly says it ranks as the most expensive per response). I would treat vendor-authored comparisons as a starting point, not gospel, but this one is unusually candid about its own weak spot.
Four units, one problem
Before the numbers, a warning about what is being counted.
- Ahrefs prices a check: one prompt, on one platform, in one location.
- Rank Prompt prices a credit: one prompt on up to three engines.
- Searchable prices per prompt per model per month.
- Promptwatch prices a response allowance: every published plan allows 120 responses per prompt per month across all models.
To normalize, I divide the monthly price by the monthly response or check allowance and multiply by 1,000. Where a vendor only publishes prompts, I note the assumption. Prices come from vendor pages and third-party roundups dated July to October 2026, so confirm on the vendor's pricing page before buying.
A "response" is also not a standard unit of information. Promptwatch Data's average sources per response report shows ChatGPT citing about 5 sources per web-search answer, while Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite about 10. And ChatGPT's fan-out depth moves too: Promptwatch's query fan-out data shows averages sliding from about 2.15 queries per response in December to about 1.84 in early March, and its report on the site: operator says searches per response nearly doubled on August 8, 2026. Cost per response buys different amounts of information on different engines, and it drifts when models change.
Cost per 1,000 responses: the comparison table
Figures marked "derived" are my arithmetic from published allowances. Figures marked "published" come straight from the vendor.
| Tool | Entry plan | Allowance | Approx. cost per 1,000 responses | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs custom prompts (Scale) | $250/mo | 25,000 checks | ~$10 | Published unit price |
| Ahrefs custom prompts (Basic) | $50/mo | 2,500 checks | ~$20 | Published unit price |
| Promptwatch Professional | $245/mo | 18,000 responses | ~$13.60 | Derived |
| Promptwatch Business | $579/mo | 42,000 responses | ~$13.80 | Derived |
| Promptwatch Essential | $95/mo | 6,000 responses | ~$15.80 | Derived |
| AIclicks Starter | $59/mo | 4,650 responses | ~$13 | Published per-response figure |
| Rankscale Pro | $99/mo | up to 4,800 answers | ~$21 | Published |
| ZipTie | from $42.75/mo | pay per check | $10 per 1,000 checks per engine | Published |
| Scrunch Core | from $250/mo | 5,000 responses | ~$50 | Published |
| Nightwatch Starter | EUR 79/mo (billed yearly) | 1,500 answers | ~EUR 53 | Published |
| Writesonic Starter | $79/mo (billed annually) | 50 answers tracked daily | ~$53 per tracked answer | Published |
| AthenaHQ Starter | $295/mo | 3,600 credits | ~$82 | Published |
| Rank Prompt Agency | $149/mo | 3,000 responses | ~$50 | Published allowance |
| Rank Prompt Starter | $49/mo | 450 responses | ~$109 | Published allowance |
Two things stand out. The cheapest per-response prices belong to tools that sell checks in bulk (Ahrefs packages, ZipTie, AIclicks, Promptwatch), and the most expensive belong to tools that bundle other work into the allowance. Whether that bundling is worth it is a separate question, covered below.

Mission Growth's roundup of 26 trackers does the same exercise, and reports costs running from $0.010 to $1.59 a check once every plan is divided into checks. It also notes that 21 of 25 third-party trackers name Google AI Mode, and 5 of those gate it behind higher plans, which is a pricing detail a headline figure hides.
Cost per prompt per month
Per-prompt pricing is what most buyers think in, because you pick a list of prompts and ask what tracking them costs. It is also easier to game.
| Tool | Entry plan | Prompts | Cost per prompt per month | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI Lite | $29 | 15 | ~$1.93 | Four engines; Gemini and AI Mode are paid add-ons |
| Rankability | entry tier | n/a | ~$0.97 | Daily sampling, ChatGPT focus |
| Rankscale | Pro $99 | n/a | ~$1.06 | Assumes daily sampling, ChatGPT focus |
| Searchable | Pro $125 | 100 per model | $1.25 per prompt per model | Multiply by models tracked |
| Peec AI Starter | $95 | 50 | $1.90 | Three models daily, unlimited users |
| Promptwatch Essential | $95 | 50 | $1.90 | All models, 120 responses per prompt |
| Promptwatch Professional | $245 | 150 | ~$1.63 | Derived |
| Cairrot | entry tier | n/a | $2.60 | ChatGPT focus, sampling cadence unpublished |
| Morningscore Business | $99 | 100 | $0.99 | Weekly checks, per the Mission Growth roundup |
| Profound Starter | $99 | 50 | $1.98 | ChatGPT only |
| SE Visible Basic | $99 | 200 | ~$0.50 | SE Ranking's AI product |
The ChatGPT-focused figures for Rankability, Rankscale and Cairrot come from Searchable's ChatGPT tracker roundup, which is itself written by a competitor. Treat the low per-prompt numbers with suspicion until you check sampling frequency. A prompt checked once a week and a prompt checked hourly are not the same purchase.
The comparison trap
Searchable's $1.25 per prompt per model looks pricier than Rankscale's $1.06 until you realize it multiplies by models. Track five models and the per-prompt cost is $6.25. Promptwatch's $1.90 covers all models in the plan. The cheapest-looking number is often the one with the most footnotes.
The 15 tools, briefly
Checks-based pricing
Ahrefs prices the unit directly. Its pricing page states that tracking one prompt on one platform in one location uses 1 check, with overage at $0.020, $0.015 and $0.010 per check across its three packages (that is where the ~$10 to ~$20 range above comes from). The package prices are $50, $100 and $250 a month, on top of an Ahrefs plan (Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 at listed monthly rates). If you already pay for Ahrefs, this is the cheapest per-response route here.
Ahrefs Brand Radar is the market-wide benchmark product: an AI index from $199 a month, $699 for all models. It answers a different question (how a category looks) than prompt tracking does.

ZipTie charges $0.01 per prompt per engine per check, or $0.0087 per check across all seven engines, with presets from $42.75 a month and a 7-day trial that needs no card. If your volume is irregular, paying per check is the cleanest model on this list.
Prompt-tier pricing
Otterly.AI starts at $29 for 15 prompts, and moves to $189 for 100 and $489 for 400. Fifteen prompts is a thin sample of any category, and the jump to $189 is steep, but as a first step it is the cheapest serious entry.
Otterly.AI

Peec AI is $95 for 50 prompts, $245 for 150 and $495 for 350, each tracking three models daily with unlimited users. Unlimited seats matter if several people need to look at the data.
Profound starts at $99 for 50 ChatGPT-only prompts and $399 for 100 prompts across three platforms. That is a lot of money per prompt, justified only if you need its enterprise features.
Profound

Scrunch Core is $250 a month for 125 prompts and 5,000 responses, about $0.05 per response, with AI Mode gated to Enterprise according to Mission Growth.

AthenaHQ Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits, about $0.082 a response. There is a free Essential plan if you only want a look.
Rankscale Pro is $99 a month for 1,200 credits, up to 4,800 answers, with a 7-day trial. Pro+ at $229 adds the REST API.
Nightwatch Starter is EUR 79 a month billed yearly for 50 prompts and 1,500 answers, with Google AI Mode on every plan. That makes it one of the better picks if AI Mode is non-negotiable.

SE Ranking's Core plan is $129 a month for 100 daily prompts on five models alongside classic rank tracking, and its standalone SE Visible product is $99 for 200 prompts. Consider it if you already run SE Ranking.

Rank Prompt Starter is $49 a month for 150 prompts across up to three engines, which works out to 450 responses. The vendor calls itself the most expensive per response in its own comparison and argues that the allowance also covers content writing and audits. Judge that tradeoff yourself.

The platform tier
Promptwatch is the one on this list where pricing and capability need to be read together. The plans are Essential at $95 a month (50 prompts, 6,000 responses, all models), Professional at $245 (150 prompts, 18,000 responses) and Business at $579 (350 prompts, 42,000 responses), with a 7-day free trial on the first two. The response allowance works out to roughly $14 to $16 per 1,000 responses, which is among the lowest here for a tool that monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and others in each country. The difference from the pure trackers is what the money also buys: Promptwatch includes crawler logs, visitor analytics and a content agent that fixes the gaps it finds, so you are not paying a tracker for monitoring and a second tool for the work.

For a fuller list of options, the directories at ai-rank-tools.com and bestgeosoftware.com cover more trackers than fit here.
What you give up on cheap plans
From the plan details across these tools, the trade usually goes in this order:
- Engines. Entry plans often cover three or four models, with Gemini, Claude and AI Mode as add-ons (Otterly sells Gemini and AI Mode at $9 each on Lite and Claude at $29).
- Seats and workspaces.
- Exports and API access. ZipTie charges $10 a month extra for API and MCP; Rankscale gates the API at Pro+.
- Sampling depth, meaning how many times each prompt reruns.
Given the noise problem, point four is the one I would protect. If a tool samples each prompt once a week, you are buying a pretty chart.
How to pick, by situation
| Situation | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Testing under 20 prompts | Otterly Lite, or a free trial | Cheapest serious start |
| Already pay for Ahrefs | Ahrefs prompt packages | Lowest published unit price |
| 50 to 150 prompts, all models | Promptwatch, Peec AI | Predictable response allowances |
| Irregular volume | ZipTie | Pay per check |
| AI Mode must be included | Nightwatch, LLM Pulse | AI Mode on every plan |
| Already on SE Ranking | SE Ranking Core | One invoice |
| Need tracking plus content and fixes | Promptwatch | Allowance also covers action |
Match prompts per day times engines first, then check AI Mode status, then compare cost per response.
Checklist before you buy
- Convert the plan to cost per 1,000 responses and write down how many engines each prompt covers.
- Ask how often each prompt reruns. Daily is a reasonable floor.
- Check which engines are gated, especially AI Mode, Gemini and Claude.
- Take the annual discount only after a trial. Most vendors give 15% to 20% off.
- Confirm the price on the vendor's page. This category reprices constantly, and several figures above come from vendor-written comparisons.
Bottom line
If you want the lowest unit price and already have an Ahrefs plan, buy the prompt package. If you want all models, real interface data and tracking that also tells you what to fix, Promptwatch's $14 to $16 per 1,000 responses is hard to beat for the scope. If you only need a cheap look, Otterly Lite at $29 or a ZipTie pay-per-check account is enough to start. Whatever you pick, compare per response, not per plan.
