Key takeaways
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from roughly 4% to about 0.5% on August 14, 2026, so older advice about winning ChatGPT through Reddit threads is out of date.
- Reddit still shows up in Google AI Overviews (about 2.1%) and Perplexity (0.86%), but at small shares. Check the date on any study before you trust it.
- For local and review-type queries, track which sites ChatGPT actually cites, then monitor your presence on those sites instead of guessing.
- A sensible stack has three layers: a local listings and review tool, a social listening tool for Reddit and forums, and an AI visibility tracker that shows what the models say.
- Check results manually each month. Real-UI answers, API answers and different cities can all return different results.
Why this topic changed in 2026
A year ago the advice was simple. Get talked about on Reddit, collect reviews on a few platforms, and ChatGPT would eventually repeat your name. Plenty of blog posts still say this. The Frizerly post on how Reddit threads influence ChatGPT, for example, leans on the OpenAI and Reddit data partnership and treats Reddit as a major recommendation source.

That framing was reasonable when it was written. The data has moved since. According to Promptwatch Data's report on Reddit citations dropping in ChatGPT (covering Jul 7 to Aug 17, 2026), Reddit held a steady 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7. On Aug 8 it slipped into the mid 2s, and on Aug 14 it fell below 1%. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.
One caveat from that report is worth repeating: the size of the drop is flagged as provisional, because a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out. The direction, though, matches what a second report shows. In Promptwatch's social media citations by AI model report for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations was 0.09%, down from 5.19% in the earlier edition.
The August 8 date also lines up with a change in how ChatGPT searches. ChatGPT started using the site: operator at scale that day, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries. I would not claim that change caused the Reddit drop, since the research doesn't say so, but it is the first thing to look at if you want to understand ChatGPT's shifting source mix.
What the current data says about sources
Here is how social platforms break down by engine for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, per Promptwatch Data:
| Engine | Share of citations from social | Notable platforms |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn 0.3%, Reddit 0.09% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn and Reddit tied at 0.86%, YouTube 0.79% |
Two things stand out. ChatGPT has nearly stopped citing social media at all, while AI Overviews pulls about 26 times more of its citations from social platforms. And if you care about Google audiences, Facebook and YouTube now matter more than Reddit.
What does ChatGPT cite instead? Promptwatch's content type report (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026) puts product pages first at 22.4% of citations, followed by landing pages and listicles. For travel prompts, which are the closest match for local and review-style searching, Skyscanner, Going and Tripadvisor lead, and booking and search sites earn more than half of the citations shown.
My reading: for local businesses, review and booking platforms and your own pages carry more weight in ChatGPT than forum chatter does. I did not find direct data on Google Business Profile or Yelp citation shares, so treat that as a hypothesis to test in your own category, not a settled fact.
Step 1: Find out what ChatGPT cites in your category
Before buying anything, run the searches yourself. Open ChatGPT with search on, and ask the questions your customers ask: "best plumber in [city]", "which dentist near me takes walk-ins", "[your product] vs [competitor]". For each answer, write down:
- Which businesses are named, and in what order
- Which domains appear in the source list
- Whether any Reddit threads, Yelp pages, Tripadvisor pages or directory listings show up
- Whether your own site is cited at all
Do this for 20 to 30 prompts, in the city you serve. A spreadsheet is fine. The pattern you see (say, three directories and one local news site dominating) tells you where to put effort. A Reddit post on the same topic that ranks well in Google may never appear in ChatGPT, which matches what a local SEO thread on r/localseo described: strong organic rankings, yet ChatGPT recommends a competitor with more contextual mentions across sources.
This manual pass gets stale quickly, so repeat it monthly. ChatGPT's sources can shift in a single day, as August showed.
Step 2: Track local reviews and listings
Reviews and listings are the data that local-intent answers are most likely to rest on, because they are structured, consistent and widely syndicated. The job here is keeping them accurate and fresh, and seeing where you are missing.
Tools worth knowing in this layer:

BrightLocal covers local rank tracking, citation building and review monitoring for multi-location businesses.

Whitespark is a local SEO toolkit built around citation audits and local rank tracking.
Moz Local manages listings and reviews from one place, which helps with consistent name, address and phone data.
Yext pushes listing data to many publishers and is positioned for multi-location brands across traditional and AI search.
Chatmeter combines reputation and search visibility for multi-location brands.

Trustpilot matters if your category leans on public review profiles, since it gives you a place to collect and respond to reviews.
For review volume and response, [tool:birdeye] and [tool:reputation] are the other names that come up for multi-location reputation work.

A caution: I have not seen data that links any of these tools' output to ChatGPT citations directly. They keep the underlying data clean and current. Whether ChatGPT then uses that data depends on which sources it cites in your category, which is why Step 1 comes first.
Step 3: Monitor Reddit and forum mentions
Reddit is no longer a dependable path into ChatGPT, but you should still watch it for three reasons. Google AI Overviews and Perplexity still cite it. Reddit threads still rank in Google. And customers still read them before buying.
Good tools for mention monitoring:
Brand24 tracks mentions and sentiment across social platforms and forums.
Awario searches the web and social platforms for brand mentions and works as a lighter-weight alternative.

GummySearch is built specifically for Reddit audience research, handy for finding the pain points and questions in your niche's subreddits.

Mentionlytics is another option for tracking brand mentions across the web.
For a bigger budget, [tool:brandwatch] and [tool:talkwalker] cover social listening at enterprise scale.

Practical rules for Reddit in 2026:
- Participate honestly. Disclose that you work for the business and answer the question being asked.
- Prioritize subreddits that show up in Google results for your category, since that is where AI Overviews find them.
- Put the bulk of your content effort on your own site and on the guides, comparisons and listicles that ChatGPT does cite. That is Promptwatch's own recommendation from the social citations report.
Step 4: Track what the AI models actually say
Listings and mention tools tell you what exists. They don't tell you what ChatGPT says. For that you need an AI visibility tracker that queries the models repeatedly, in specific countries, and records answers and citations.
Promptwatch does this using the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and others, which matters because the user-facing answer can differ from the API output. It reports which pages and third-party sources get cited, including Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, and its Offsite Mentions feature catches your brand being named on third-party pages that AI cites, even without a link. State and city tracking is available from the Business plan, which is the relevant feature for local work. Check promptwatch.com/pricing for current plans.

The part I find most useful for this topic is the citation view. If Reddit has fallen out of ChatGPT but a travel site or directory has taken its place, you see that in the data instead of finding out six months later.
Other trackers in the catalog worth a look, mostly focused on monitoring:
Otterly.AI

Profound

These are generally monitoring-first. If you want to compare more options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists many of them side by side.
Comparison of tool types
| Layer | Example tools | What it tells you | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local listings and reviews | BrightLocal, Whitespark, Moz Local, Yext | Accuracy and coverage of listings, review volume | Doesn't show what ChatGPT says |
| Reddit and forum monitoring | Brand24, Awario, GummySearch | Where people discuss you and in what tone | Reddit now has a tiny ChatGPT share |
| AI visibility tracking | Promptwatch, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound | Mentions, position, citations by model | Varies by tool; many only monitor |
| Manual prompt checks | ChatGPT itself | Ground truth in your city | Doesn't scale, changes daily |
Step 5: Connect mentions to traffic
A mention is not a sale. Add analytics so you can see whether AI-driven visits show up and convert.
- Check referrers in [tool:google-analytics] for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai traffic.
- Use [tool:google-search-console] to see which pages already earn impressions in Google, since pages that rank are the ones AI Overviews tend to pull from.
- Check server logs or a crawler analytics tool to confirm AI bots can read your pages at all. A robots.txt block or JavaScript-only rendering will keep you out regardless of how many reviews you have.
Promptwatch's visitor analytics and IP-verified crawler logs do this in one place if you'd rather not stitch it together.
A monthly routine that fits in half a day
- Run 20 to 30 local prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, in your city. Log who is named and which domains are cited.
- Compare the cited domains with last month. Note new entrants and anything that vanished.
- Audit your listings and reviews on the top three cited sources. Fix inconsistent details and reply to recent reviews.
- Scan Reddit and forum mentions for factual errors or recurring complaints, and respond where it is useful.
- Check your own pages: is there a clear page for each service and location, with current prices, hours and proof?
- Review AI referral traffic and conversions.
Common mistakes
- Trusting studies without checking dates. Anything on Reddit and ChatGPT written before mid-August 2026 may overstate Reddit's influence.
- Treating one tool's score as the truth. Run the manual check to sanity-test it.
- Spamming Reddit. It rarely works, it can backfire, and its ChatGPT payoff is now small.
- Ignoring your own site. Product and landing pages are the biggest cited content types in ChatGPT.
- Tracking one model. Reddit fell in ChatGPT but only gradually in AI Overviews, so the models behave differently.
Bottom line
The old playbook of seeding Reddit to influence ChatGPT no longer fits the data, at least for now. Track what each model actually cites in your category and city, keep listings and reviews accurate on the sources that appear, and keep an eye on Reddit mainly for Google and Perplexity.
